A high carbohydrate leguminous fibre diet improves all aspects of diabetic control

, : A high carbohydrate leguminous fibre diet improves all aspects of diabetic control. Lancet 1(8210): 1-5

Diabetic control, as measured by glycosuria and pre- and postprandial blood glucose, was significantly improved in diabetic patients fed a high carbohydrate leguminous fiber diet (HL). Nine insulin-dependent and 18 non-insulin dependent diabetics were fed the HL diet for 6 weeks and a low carbohydrate diet for 6 weeks. A 24 hr. metabolic profile taken during both diet periods recorded several indicators of diabetic control. Preprandial and 2 hr.-postprandial blood glucose, glycosuria and total cholesterol were significantly lower with the HL diet in both groups of patients. The ratio of high-to-low density lipoprotein cholesterol increased significantly in non-insulin dependent diabetics on the HL diet. Although a low carbohydrate diet has been traditionally prescribed in diabetes therapy, these results show that diets high in complex carbohydrates and leguminous fiber give better diabetic control. Carbohydrate restriction which causes poor patient compliance, and thus loss of diabetic control, may be unnecessary.
