A historical outline of famine in Ethiopia

, : A historical outline of famine in Ethiopia. African Environment Special Report (2): 52-58

Famine in Ethiopia has been a recurrent phenomenon at least since the first recorded one in the 9th century. They have usually been attributed to the wrath of god, though records show they have often been associated with locusts, war, drought, or cattle plagues. Some chroniclers have also noted that the socio-economic system of Ethiopia left the peasant at the mercy of the country's elite and their armies, as well as subject to natural phenomena.
