Home-based preprimary programmes have been implemented in Peru as a replication of the Portage Project developed in USA. These programmes emphasize the parent role in adequate child care of the severely socially disadvantaged. The programmes are directed at 3-5 year olds. Nonprofessional community personnel seek parent participation in child rearing by visiting families once a week for one hour.
