A hormone effecting immobilization in pupariating fly larvae

, : A hormone effecting immobilization in pupariating fly larvae. Journal of Experimental Biology, 93: 51-63

Laboratory studies showed that the haemolymph of 1-2-h-old (orange) purparia of Sarcophaga bullata Parker contains a factor (PIF) that immobilises mature fly larvae, most strongly 6-24 h before pupariation. It has all the properties of a protein: a mol. wt. of between 100 000 and 300 000 daltons, it is heat labile, non-dialysable, destroyed by trypsin, and precipitated by NH4SO4.
