A hydrologic model of aspen-conifer succession in the western United States

, : A hydrologic model of aspen-conifer succession in the western United States. USDA Forest Service Research Paper, Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station (INT-213): 17

A computer model (ASPCON) is presented which simulates the hydrological effects of succession from grasses/forbs to aspen (Populus tremuloides) to conifer (Abies/Picea/Pseudotsuga/Pinus) in the Rocky Mountain area. Application of the model to an experimental catchment area in Utah predicted reductions in water yield as succession proceeded. Changes in streamflow were mainly due to an interaction between seasonal consumption for each vegetation type and the influence of each type on snowpack.
