A study was conducted on the effects of 25, 50, 75 and 100% of laboratory-estimated gypsum requirement, and equivalent quantities of pyrites on the composition of the saturation extracts of sodic soils after incubation at 1/2 moisture content of the saturation percentage. Pyrites was only .apprx. 25% as effective as an equivalent quantity of gypsum. The effect of pyrites on changes in soil properties could be ascribed chiefly to the initial acidity of the pyrites, and there was practically no further oxidation of pyrites after incorporation in sodic soils of high pH. When the amendments were surface-applied and leached, Na removal indicated an improvement in the effectiveness of pyrites, which apparently was .apprx. 1/2 as effective as gypsum. Lesser neutralization of acid in surface-applied pyrites might have resulted in greater removal of Na from the complex. Only the oxidized S fraction, and not content of pyrites, could serve as a basis for deciding the quantity of amendment for reclamation of sodic soils.
