A laboratory study of the possible development of migratory activity in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, at the time of invasions and recessions

, : A laboratory study of the possible development of migratory activity in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, at the time of invasions and recessions. Behaviour 75(3/4): 251-261

Change from periods of swarming to periods of recession was stimulated in Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.) in the laboratory in France by varying the density of succeedind generations (by group rearing followed by rearing in isolation for 1-3 generations, then group rearing again for several succeeding generations). Flight behaviour levels of isolated generations were considerably lower than those of control generations (permanently reared in groups).
