A lack of readily demonstrable virus antigens in the tissues of rabbits and cattle infected with malignant catarrhal fever virus

, : A lack of readily demonstrable virus antigens in the tissues of rabbits and cattle infected with malignant catarrhal fever virus. British Veterinary Journal 136(5): 478-483

Direct immunofluorescence to detect malignant catarrhal fever virus antigens only rarely detected isolated, positive cells in frozen sections of infectious lymphoid tissues from 6 rabbits and 2 calves clinically affected by the disease. Complement fixation, immunodiffusion and counterimmunoelectrophoresis tests did not detect malignant catarrhal fever virus antigens in the same tissues. In 769 different tissues collected from rabbits killed at intervals after infection, the only positive fluorescence for viral antigens was in occasional cells in the lymphoid tissues of some infected animals from day 3 onwards and a small focus of cells in the cecal tonsil of 1 rabbit killed 3 days after infection. The detection of viral antigens in infectious tissues is unlikely to prove useful in the diagnosis of malignant catarrhal fever of either cattle or rabbits.
