A larval diet for rearing phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae)

, : A larval diet for rearing phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae). Journal of Medical Entomology 18(5): 446

A species of Lutzomyia near L. cruciata (Coq.), and also L. anthophora (Addis), L. shannoni (Dyar) and L. vexator (Coq.) from southern regions of the USA were reared for 16, 10, 7 and 4 generations, respectively in the laboratory in Florida, on a larval diet of rabbit excreta and laboratory chow; its preparation, which is outlined, included fermentation and ageing for a month in a closed container until any fungi had developed and disappeared in order to eliminate excessive fungal growth as a cause of larval mortality.
