On the Hardangervidda Plateau at 1000-1400 m alt. the effects of grazing by wild and domestic reindeers on the availability of Cetraria nivalis- scrubland and reindeer lichen (C. nivalis, Cladonia rangiferina, C. arbuscula, C. mitis and C. stellaris) scrubland or grass heaths and the growth rate of lichens protected from grazing are described. In 1958-65 the increase in the wild reindeer population (up to 26 000 head) was proportional to the decrease in lichen availability.
