A linear source of electrostatically charged spray

, : A linear source of electrostatically charged spray. Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research 27(4): 355-362

A device is described which produces charged spray by electrostatic atomization. It was tested to examine the uniformity of the drop size spectrum, to determine the way in which the drop size depended on the operating voltage and to determine the charge level on the drops to test suitability for use as a linear source of charged spray for laboratory trials. Because the spray is formed by the break-up of ligaments the drop size is bi-modal, the small drops are .apprx. 1/3 of the diameter of the large drops. The volume median diameter of the spray may be varied from 160-60 .mu.m by changing the operating voltage from 14 kV to 25 kV, respectively. The overall charge: mass ratio of the spray ranges from 1.3 mC/kg at 14 kV to 4.0 mC/kg at 25 kV. [Electrostatic charging of sprays is under consideration for the application of agricultural pesticides.].
