Pregnant women in a rural area of Kenya participated in a clinic for the duration of pregnancy to determine the relationships between nutritional status and outcome of pregnancy, lactation and infant growth. Statistics collected include maternal anthropometry, dietary information, blood and urine analysis, infant birth weight and infant mortality. Maternal mortality was low. Although maternal weight gain was low, low birth weight newborns were fewer than in other African countries and comparable to Britain. Infant mortality was approximately 8 percent.
