A longitudinal study on gross motor development of the children from birth to one year of age in an urban community

, : A longitudinal study on gross motor development of the children from birth to one year of age in an urban community. Indian Journal of Medical Research 70: 58-69

From the authors' unpublished data, average birthweight of boys was 2.81 and of girls 2.78 kg, their growth from birth to 1 year old put their 50th percentile bodyweight close to that of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) standard (Growth and Physical Development of Indian Infants and Children, part 1 (1968), ICMR, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, India) and slightly below the 10th percentile of the Harvard Standard (Vaughan, p. 13 in Textbook of Pediatrics, Nelson, 10th ed. (1975), Saunders Co., Philadelphia, USA). Their 50th percentile height was about that of ICMR and between the 25th and 10th percentiles of Harvard. In present study, 123 healthy term infants in Calcutta, India, including 120 Hindus were studied from birth to 1 year old. To 3 months old their gross motor development in some test items was ahead of that of western children, perhaps because of differences in relation with the mother and in culture and environment, though they lagged at 1 year old, probably because of poor nutrition.
