Important aspects of the physical environment of the basin are described. Most significant are the nature and distribution of rock types and their structure. A geological map and a map of landscape units based on a common lithology, both of scale 1:200 000 are provided. Laboratory data of 19 key profiles were used to classify the soils according to the USDA (1975) system. In making the maps, air photo details at 1:20 000 scale were transferred to a final mapping scale of 1:100 000.
