The specific alteration of the position of the branches toward the longitudinal axis in the stem in withered poplar trees is explained by the presence of tension wood. As a result of the different rate of shrinking of the normal and strain wood, longitudinal warping and bending of the branches toward the stem is obtained. A survey is made of the causes of tension wood, the anatomic and submicroscopic structure and the physical and mechanical properties of the strain wood.
