A meridic diet and quantitative effects of Tween 80, fatty acid mixtures and inorganic salts on development and survival of the endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L

, : A meridic diet and quantitative effects of Tween 80, fatty acid mixtures and inorganic salts on development and survival of the endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. Zeitschrift Fuer Angewandte Entomologie: 915: 433-441

A chemically-defined synthetic diet developed for the hymenopterous endoparasitoid, P. turionellae, allowed .apprx. 70% of the newly-hatched aseptic larvae to become normal and fecund adults. A moderate level of Tween 80 prevented any harmful effects of free fatty acids to the larvae, but a higher level was deleterious. The fat requirements of the larvae to become normal adults were met by a fatty acid mixture dominated by linolenic acid. Dietary levels of inorganic salts played an important role in post-larval development. When their level exceeded 0.55% of the diet, the yield of normal adults decreased and the percentage of abnormal adults increased.
