A method for electronically monitoring the ambulatory activity of honeybees under dark conditions

, : A method for electronically monitoring the ambulatory activity of honeybees under dark conditions. Behavior Research Methods and Instrumentation 11(4): 433-436

The electronic apparatus uses infrared beams (wavelength 940 nm) to monitor the movements of an individual bee in a dark area 100 mm X 100 mm. During the first 20 min of an experiment the mean walking speed of a bee moving for a distance of 100 mm was 45.6 plus or minus 1.51 mm/s, with a maximum of 59.88 mm/s. Six temporal patterns of ambulatory activity were observed; after the first 20 min, activity decreased for the rest of the 2 h experiment.
