A method for establishing character inter-relations in plant collections, and its possible application to plant improvement programmes

, : A method for establishing character inter-relations in plant collections, and its possible application to plant improvement programmes. Euphytica 29(3): 625-633

Attention is drawn to the difficulty of recognizing the possible importance of inividual plant descriptors. The difficulty could be reduced if it were possible to exaine the inter-relations of all recorded characters. This problem, formerly numerically intractable, was solved, and the new method was applied to data from plant introduction programs of the grass Urochloa and the legume Stylosanthes. The method is robust under change of scale in the data, and permits the addition of new characters to an existing data-base. The method apparently offers promise in simplifying the planning of plant improvement programs.
