A method for estimating rates of nucleotide substitution using DNA sequence data

, : A method for estimating rates of nucleotide substitution using DNA sequence data. Theoretical Population Biology, 213: 318-328

A method of estimating the av. number of evolutionarily acceptable substitutions per nucleotide since the most recent common ancestor of a pair of homologous sequences is given. The estimate is derived assuming a Poisson-like model for the evolutionary process. A model is also suggested for analysing nucleotide sequence data in M homologous sequences, where M more than or equal to 3. A simulation study is reported showing that the estimates are satisfactory providing there is sufficient homology between the sequences. To demonstrate the methods, a numerical example using some beta -globin data is presented.
