A method for investigating the influence of soil water potential on water consumption, development and yield of plants

A method is described for supplying small and large greenhouse pots continuously and automatically with water while maintaining different soil water potentials. This system consists of diaphragm cells which are vertically inserted into the soil, storage water bottles, regulating manometers, electronic control equipment and a vacuum pump. This method proved satisfactory for pot-grown sugar beet in greenhouses and in the field until the soil water potential reached -0.60 bar.
