Water extracts of horse manure (fresh dung or old manure heaps) were plated on a minimal medium of pH 6.8, containing one amino acid (asparagine) and one vitamin (thiamin), and supplemented with streptomycin and chloramphenicol, and furfuraldehyde. Plates were incubated at 37 C in the dark.
