A method for laboratory maintenance of Lymnaea natalensis and for mass production of Fasciola gigantica metacercariae

, : A method for laboratory maintenance of Lymnaea natalensis and for mass production of Fasciola gigantica metacercariae. Journal of Parasitology 67(5): 735-737

Techniques for breeding L. natalensis and for keeping snails infected with F. gigantica are described. The snails were collected in Kenya and the strain of F. gigantica was from Tanzania. Growth in infected (5 miracidia/snail) and uninfected snails was comparable until week 6, but therafter growth was reduced in the infected snails. No eggs were produced by infected snails, whereas 9888 were produced by the controls (originally 25 snails) over 14 weeks.
