A method for the rapid collection of kiwifruit pollen

, : A method for the rapid collection of kiwifruit pollen. Abstracts, XXIst International Horticultural Congress (Vol. I): Abstract No. 1090

Individual male kiwifruit vines (Actinidia chinensis) can produce up to 65 g of pollen over a 2-3 week flowering period. Kiwifruit pollen usually exceeds 75% germination in a sucrose-containing medium. Data suggest that one hectare of male vines would produce sufficient pollen to pollinate 135 hectares of female vines. As part of a programme to pollinate kiwifruit artificially a method for extracting pollen from male flowers was developed.
