A method for the rapid testing of the resistance of spring barley to aluminium

, : A method for the rapid testing of the resistance of spring barley to aluminium. Biuletyn Instytutu Hodowli i Aklimatyzacji Roslin (142): 23

Genetically determined resistance may be detected within seven to nine days by supplying grains germinating in quartz sand with an acid solution of aluminium. At the two-leaved stage, the seedlings are compared with untreated controls. The percentage reduction in root length found is a measure of susceptibility, and misshapen roots are commoner in the more susceptible plants.
