In studies of resistance to bacterial black chaff, caused by Xanthomonas translucens, at Winnipeg, results from tests on seedlings had little relation to field resistance. A satisfactory assessment of field resistance was made by inducing artificial epiphytotics in replicated plots of a large number of varieties in successive years.
