A method of using the proportions of undamaged carrots or parsnips to estimate the relative population densities of carrot fly (Psila rosae) larvae, and its practical applications

, : A method of using the proportions of undamaged carrots or parsnips to estimate the relative population densities of carrot fly (Psila rosae) larvae, and its practical applications. Annals of Applied Biology, 1002: 229-244

Data obtained from field and microplot experiments in England in 1955, 1963--69 and 1977--78 were used to determine the plant-to-plant distribution of damage by Psila rosae (F.) on carrots and parsnips. The observed data were well-fitted by the relationship ln (-ln q) = ln L + constant, where q is the proportion of undamaged roots and L is the number of larval mines in a sample and is proportional to the number of associated larvae, N.
