A method to estimate persistency of milk production in dairy cattle

Data recorded on 390 Holstein-Friesian herds over a 3-yr period were analysed. Regression analysis indicated that peak yield could be estimated with greater reliability than days in milk at peak yield. In developing a single regression model to predict point estimates of sample day milk yield, the most important variables considered were milk yield on last sample day, age of cow, season, interval between sample days, stage of lactation, herd production level, and cow rank within herd.
