A methodological approach to the production of a goat herd, paying attention to milk productton and feeding

, : A methodological approach to the production of a goat herd, paying attention to milk productton and feeding. Nutrition et systemes d' alimentation de la chevre Volume 2 (2): 729-738

On the basis of data on 1000 lactations model lactation curves have been constructed for multiparous and primiparous goats kidding in different months. (A survey of performance in French herds in 1970-1979 indicated that variation in season of kidding accounted for 10-15% of variation in lactation length and 5-10% of variation in milk yield; on average primipares gave 80% less milk than multipares kidding at the same time.) Taking averages for groups within a herd, these can be used to estimate the overall annual pattern of milk yield and along with data on the development of feed intake, to estimate annual feed requirements.
