, : A study of the interrelations between water uptake, respiration and developmental changes in Zea mays grains during germination. Egyptian Journal of Botany 22(3): 193-203

Water uptake was studied in grains of maize Double Hybrid 186 after (a) soaking in distilled water (control), (b) heating at 85 deg C for 24 h to kill the embryo or (c) soaking in 5% HgCl2 sol, to kill the embryo. Water uptake was fastest during the 1st h of soaking at (a) 3.96, (b) 4.02 and (c) 2.47 g/100 grains h. After the 1st h water uptake decreased continually for grains with dead embryos but after an initial decrease it increased after 40 h for grains with viable embryos.
