Annual research report 1974 and 1975

, : Annual research report 1974 and 1975. Annual research report 1974 and 1975: 141

Dairy research in 1974, reported on pp. 3-5, included: comparison of milk yields of Friesian and Jersey cows at Koronivia Research Station; rational mating of Friesian and Jersey cows to reduce the interval between lactations and to lengthen effective productive life; supplementary feeding of dairy heifers with molasses-urea instead of coconut meal; tests on 6 grasses and 7 legumes for dairy pastures; and trials on dairy pastures involving factorial combinations of 3 levels of P, 2 grasses and 3 legumes. Dairy research in 1975, reported on pp. 77-81, included: performance of Sahiwal-Jersey heifers; effect of stocking rate and grazing management on pasture growth and cows' milk production; effect of different pre-calving grazing intensities on milking cows; effect of coconut meal supplementation on production of cows kept on Batiki blue grass + Desmodium heterophyllum pasture which improved with continuous grazing; effects of fertilizer on Bakiti blue grass + Desmodium heterophyllum pasture; yields of different grass species (for dairy cattle) under coconuts; and trials on combinations of 4 grasses and 3 legumes as dairy pastures. In the Plant Path. section (57-60) details are given of the selection of potato clones and tomato rootstocks for resistance to bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum); the incidence and control of postharvest decay of dalo caused by Pythium splendens; the incidence of citrus tristeza virus strs. and the citrus virus indexing programme. P. 25. Herbicide investigation. Various herbicides were tested in pulse crops. Diuron at 2.24 kg/ha gave the best selective weed control in groundnuts and Planavin at 1.68 kg/ha in mung bean and pigeon pea. Pp. 29-30. Weed control. In upland rice Ronstar at 6 litres/ha post-em., applied 8 days after drilling, was the most effective treatment. In irrigated rice, oxadiazon + 2,4-D isopropyl ester was better. C 288 (piperophos + dimethametryn) showed promise and controlled Salvinia. Pp. 133-135. Weed control. The problem of Cyperus aromaticus in pastures is discussed. Cyperquat at 4 kg/ha controlled the weed for 3 months during which the more desirable para grass moved in. Glyphosate at 4 kg/ha totally killed the sedge but desired species also suffered. Rottboellia exaltata which is becoming a problem in sugar-cane was well controlled by Asulox (asulam) at 50 ml/litre. Promising results were obtained with diuron and X77 Mimosa invisa was well controlled with 2,4,5-T
