Experiments using inhibitors of transcription (actinomycin D) and translation (chloramphenicol and cycloheximide) showed that capacity for cold hardening (in cucumber, Festuca pratensis, wheat and barley) and heat hardening (in cucumber) is directly related to the functioning of the protein-synthesizing system, since treatment with the inhibitors led to appreciable or complete suppression of hardening capacity, chloramphenicol being less effective than actinomycin D and cycloheximide in this respect.
