Enzymatic riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiencies in young Indian women suffering from different grades of glossitis

, : Enzymatic riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiencies in young Indian women suffering from different grades of glossitis. Nutrition reports international 24(4): 649-658

Riboflavin and pyridoxine status of pregnant and non-pregnant young, low-income women was examined using erythrocyte glutathione reductase and erythrocyte aspartate amino-transferase tests respectively. These enzymatic tests were used in an effort to discriminate between subjects with or without glossitis and to determine if chronicity and severity of glossitis ascertained by clinical grading would be reflected in the enzymatic parameters. The majority of women examined suffered from deficiencies of both vitamins. Significant differences in enzymatic tests between subjects with or without tongue lesions were not apparent, though pregnant women with lesions had significantly inferior vitamin status compared to the other groups. None of the parameters of the enzymatic tests were modulated by either the chronicity or the severity of glossitis. The results suggest that in a community with high incidence of biochemical riboflavin and/or pyridoxine deficiency, the enzymatic tests cannot further discriminate individuals at risk of developing clinical lesions.
