Ethidium bromide: host-trypanosome-drug interactions

, : Ethidium bromide: host-trypanosome-drug interactions. The host invader interplay Proc 3rd Internat Symp on the biochemistry of parasites and host parasite relationships, Beerse, Belgium, 30 June to 3 July 1980: 647-650

Rabbits were infected with Trypanosoma brucei (S42) or with T. congolense (TREU 1290) and treated 13 days later with ethidium bromide at one or 10 mg/kg body-weight by intramuscular injections. The treatment produced only a temporary effect upon the infection. There was practically no prophylactic effect when ethidium bromide was given 5 days before infection. The trypanocidal activity of rabbit serum was only transiently raised by administration of ethidium.
