Impact of defoliation by the Colorado potato beetle on potato yields

, : Impact of defoliation by the Colorado potato beetle on potato yields. Journal of Economic Entomology 73(3): 369-373

During field studies carried out in Connecticut, potato plots were exposed to partial defoliation by populations of Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) to determine how insect defoliation affected yields. The experiment was repeated 7 times at 2-weekly intervals throughout the season to determine how plant sensitivity to defoliation changed with plant development. Regressions of the percentage yield reduction of defoliated rows on percentage defoliation were calculated for each period.

This study establishes a correlation between age of chaparral cover and size of fire under a given standard of protection as follows: -(1) fires of 0 to 0.24 acres will occur in cover of any age; (2) fires of 0.25 to 9.99 acres require at least 3-...
