Between Dec. 1974 and Sept. 1978 327 teat wounds in 299 teats were operated on at the clinic for obstetrics and gynecology of the Hanover Veterinary School. 151 of the teats were injured at pasture mainly by barbed wire (134), 130 were injured in the cow shed. Contributory factors were big udder (86), bad udder shape (66), long teats (64), disquiet (64). 24% of injuries occurred between 1 wk pre- and 1 wk post partum. 181 cows were older than 5 yr.
