Investigations on the biology and distribution of ticks (Ixodoidea, Ixodidae) in north Germany. II. Ticks of migratory birds on the island of Heligoland

, : Investigations on the biology and distribution of ticks (Ixodoidea, Ixodidae) in north Germany. II. Ticks of migratory birds on the island of Heligoland. Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Zoologie 66(4): 445-461

In the springs of 1975, 1976 and 1977 and the autumn of 1975, 9871 migrating birds in 95 species were examined for infestation by ticks on the island of Heligoland, German Federal Republic. Ticks were found on 36 species. Ixodes ricinus (L.) was the commonest, constituting 96.6% of all collected larvae and nymphs. Infestation of the birds was 3.0% in 1975, 3.1% in 1976 and 2.8% in 1977. I. pari Leach was the next commonest species, with 25 larvae, 36 nymphs and 6 adult females.
