Investigations on the mould content of faeces and intestinal contents in clinically healthy and dysenteric rabbits

, : Investigations on the mould content of faeces and intestinal contents in clinically healthy and dysenteric rabbits. Kleintier Praxis 26(1): 47-51

In post-mortem examinations of rabbits which died at the age of 6-12 wk with dysentery, the most frequent finding was inflammation of the caecum. Contamination of food given to the rabbits by Mucor, Aspergillus, and Penicillium spp. was established but these fungi, together with Rhizopus and Scopulariopsis spp., were isolated from the caecum and faeces of both healthy and dysenteric rabbits. It was found that the Penicillium had an antibiotic effect on Gram + bacteria in the intestines.
