Juglone inhibits pine growth under certain moisture regimes

, : Juglone inhibits pine growth under certain moisture regimes. Soil Science Society of America Journal 42(5): 801-803

Black walnut produces juglone, a phytotoxin that has allelopathic effects on certain plant species. Field studies were conducted in SW Ontario on mixed plantations of red pine (Pinus resinosa), white pine (P. strobus) and walnut growing on the Brant-Tuscola-Colwood series of fine sandy loam soils. On excessively drained Brant sites, pine seemed unaffected by the walnut, while on imperfectly drained Tuscola and poorly drained Colwood sites, walnut suppressed or even killed the pine.
