Method of reproduction in Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. and in the 3x and 6x alloploid hybrids with P. americanum (L.) Leeke

, : Method of reproduction in Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. and in the 3x and 6x alloploid hybrids with P. americanum (L.) Leeke. Agronomy Abstracts: 56

Sexual reproduction in P. purpureum was confirmed when seven accessions were used as females in interspecific crosses with P. americanum, producing 736 hybrids. Also, megasporogenesis and embryo sac development were typically sexual in 12 P. purpureum accessions and four hexaploid interspecific hybrids. The triploid interspecific hybrids were sexual but 99% of the ovules were without an embryo sac, owing due to abortion of megaspores in the linear tetrad.
