Methods of forecasting insect infestation in oilseed rape

, : Methods of forecasting insect infestation in oilseed rape. Bulletin OEPP 10(2): 119-128

The coleopterous pests of oilseed rape are monitored in France by observers who send the following daily information to the Plant Protection Service: growth stage of the crop, insects caught in yellow dishes (flea beetles, weevils, pollen beetles), insects present on the crop and damage observed. Several years of observation show that dishes placed at the level of the top of the crop provide an excellent indication of the colonization flights of the insects. These flights are determined by climatic factors (temperature and insolation) and occur simultaneously over wide areas. They can be detected with a limited number of observation stations (for example, 3/department) or predicted from meteorological data. The risk at the more local level can only be estimated with a larger number of stations, in view of the great heterogeneity of soils and microclimates in France.
