Monitoring the effects of clearfelling on soil nutrient loss

, : Monitoring the effects of clearfelling on soil nutrient loss. What' s New in Forest Research (70): 4

A method has been developed in New Zealand for pre-felling prediction of the potential loss of soil nutrient (nitrate) after clear felling. Trenched plots of 1X2 m were surrounded by a 1-m-deep trench which was lined with polythene, to prevent lateral transfer and plant uptake of water and nutrients, and backfilled; understorey vegetation was cut and left lying. Soil water samples were collected by suction from tube lysimeters with a ceramic cup set 80 cm deep into the soil.
