Root interaction between Bromus tectorum and Poa pratensis: a three-dimensional analysis

, : Root interaction between Bromus tectorum and Poa pratensis: a three-dimensional analysis. Ecology 63(3): 640-646

The spatial distribution of the roots of Bromus tectorum and Poa pratensis (smooth meadowgrass) grown singly or in a mixture was examined using a double-labelling radioisotope technique. Interaction between the root systems of the 2-species caused a reduction in the volume of B. tectorum roots in plants > 30 days old. B. tectorum roots failed to develop laterally. This result may explain the inability of B. tectorum to persist in established smooth meadowgrass swards.
