Investigations have been conducted to assess the nature and type of available human resources of the Indian arid zone with a view to suggesting ways and means for their optimum utilization. With regard to stemming rapid population growth (186 percent from 1901-1971), family planning programs have been instituted. Population growth has also resulted in a decline of land available per household from 18 ha in 1951 to 12 ha in 1971.
