The Kelso dune complex

, : The Kelso dune complex. Aeolian Features of Southern California: A Comparative Planetary Geology Guidebook R Greeley, M B Womer, R P Papson, and P D Spudies, Editors: 53-63

The Kelso dunes cover 175 km2 and consist of modest-sized transverse dunes surrounding and partly superimposed on several larger, irregular, linear ridges bearing N 65 deg E which rise nearly 170 m above the valley floor. The dune field is elongated measuring 70 km from west to east. The location of the dune field in the center of the Kelso valley, untied to bedrock outcrops, suggests the location is related to a multi-directional wind regime strongly influenced by local topography.
