The effect of wind on the growth of rice and barley plants

, : The effect of wind on the growth of rice and barley plants. Reports of the Institute for Agricultural Research, Tohoku University (33): 1-14

Rice and barley grown in water culture were subjected to wind speeds of 4.2-9.7 m/s (rice) and 2.5-7 m/s (barley) for 6 h each day for 18-19 or 28 days. In barley NAR, RGR and LAR increased with increasing wind speed but results for rice were more variable. Wind increased ethylene production in both spp. and increased production of another volatile which was probably ethane especially in rice. Wind decreased the GA content of roots and shoots in rice.
