The medium-term plan 1981-83: a critical evaluation

, : The medium-term plan 1981-83: a critical evaluation. Rivista di Economia Agraria 36(2): 259-265

Three main objectives are involved in the plan: (1) Reducing the level of dependence on imports for energy, food and wood products and increasing the positive contributions to the balance of payments such as tourism; (2) Reducing wastage in the capital goods industry (iron and steel, chemicals, ship building) and better use of resources through reconversion and restructuring; (3) Improvements in civil provision (housing, health, transport) and development of infrastructure for sectors such as agro industry, electronics etc. The sectoral implications are discussed in this article and include the following for agriculture: (a) an increase in value of gross national product of 3.2% in contrast to the annual rate of 1.5% between 1970-79; (b) a reduction of the gap in trade balance in the food and agriculture sector; (c) an increase in investment in the Mezzogiorno.
