Adult buffalo and cattle of either sex were prepared with rumen cannulae and fed on a diet based on straw and a concentrate mixture of barley grain and mustard cake without urea or with 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 or 90% of the protein provided by urea. After 20 days rumen liquor was collected daily for 10 days just before and 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after feeding. Cellulose digestion was measured by the nylon bag method.
