Studies on sex expression, sex ratio and fruit-set as affected by nitrogen levels and growth regulator sprays in Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl

, : Studies on sex expression, sex ratio and fruit-set as affected by nitrogen levels and growth regulator sprays in Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl. JNKVV Research Journal 14(3/4): 47-52

The variety Pusa Summer Prolific Long was treated with four rates of nitrogen fertilizer alone and combined with three growth regulators (the latter applied as sprays). Most treatments induced earlier female flowers, formation of female flowers at lower nodes, more female flowers and a higher ratio of female : male flowers than normal, resulting in increased fruit yields. The most effective treatment was 300 p.p.m. ethephon or 25 p.p.m.
