An evaluation of the possible use of the vaginal smear for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep

, : An evaluation of the possible use of the vaginal smear for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep. World Review of Animal Production 19(1): 15-18

Vaginal smears were collected from 148 ewes of unknown pregnancy or non-pregnancy status at 23-146 days after mating. Smears were fixed and stained and cells classified into nucleated polygonal, non-nucleated polygonal, large nucleated spherical, small nucleated spherical and leukocytes. The proportion of large nucleated spherical cells were significantly higher at 41-50, 51-60 and 131-140 days of pregnancy (55%, 53% and 48% respectively).
