Ethnic food habits

, : Ethnic food habits. Nutrition and food science: 21-22

The role of food in the Chinese culture is discussed, based on the minority ehtnic groups food habits in Britain. Food, to the Chinese, is an art form akin to literature and painting. The variety, texture, smell, flavor and appearance of the prepared meal are vitally important. Elaborate meals don't require an inordinate amount of time or equipment. A brief history of food's place in Chinese culture is presented. In Britain, many Chinese mothers regard school meals as non-nourishing and unbalanced, thus they prepare a snack meal for their children to counterbalance these unsatisfactory meals. The same attitude is exhibited towards hospital meals. Many patients bring food from home or have it brought to them. Since the Chinese have remained a tightly knit ethnic group, their food habits reflect their culture and philosophies more so than other ethnic groups. Because the Chinese children are more open than their parents, the older ways may conflict with the newer ways and cause dissention between parent and child, creating psychological as well as nutritional problems.
